Derinkuyu Underground City

Derinkuyu Underground City, which was the settlement of the first Christians of Cappadocia, was also frequently used in the Byzantine period. With its history dating back to BC, the legendary city, which extends to 7 floors below the ground, is subject to intense attention of guests. The caves, which consist of a church, kitchen, barn, storage area, cemetery and various living spaces, carry the traces of the past.

The history of Derinkuyu dates back to the Assyrians, one of the first inhabitants of the Cappadocia region. The first Christians, escaping from Roman soldiers, settled in the Cappadocia region using various routes and founded the Derinkuyu underground city. They hid for a long time in this underground city, the entrance of which is not very noticeable. It consists of rooms used for many purposes by tunnels connected to each other. There are large stone cylinders at the entrances and exits of the tunnels to prevent entry into the tunnel for security purposes. Derinkuyu underground city also has a missionary school, a confessional, a baptismal pool and an interesting well.
