This touristic region, which dates back to the 4th century, consisting of rock-carved caves and fairy chimneys, is protected as a world heritage. It was also used as a settlement in ancient times. It is rich in monasteries, churches and chapels, and there are many places to visit. It is located 2 km east of Göreme Town.
Göreme Open Air Museum is considered to be the place where the monastery education system began. Later, Soğanlı, Ihlara and Açıksaray are the places where the same education system was seen later. The main idea of the various paintings inside the church is taken from the Torah, the Bible and the life of Jesus Christ. Göreme Open Air Museum has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List as a natural and cultural asset since December 6, 1985.
