Selime Monastery

Selime Monastery, which is the largest monastery of Cappadocia, which is connected to the Güzelyurt district of Aksaray province, is located at the end of the Ihlara Valley. The uniquely beautiful fairy chimneys and the ruins of the orthodox belief welcome the tourists visiting the region. Selime Monastery bears the traces of many states such as Roman, Hittite, Byzantine and Ottoman Empire.

Selime Monastery was built on two floors and contains depictions such as Jesus' ascension to heaven and the Virgin Mary. One of the most important features of the monastery is that it is the place of education for the clergy in the Cappadocia region. In addition, the service that was read aloud for the first time was held in Selime Monastery. As a result of shaping the rocks with the art of carving, churches bearing the traces of the Byzantine period were built. The upper part of Selime Monastery was built as a castle.
